Exterior cleaning
in Monmouth

Half an hour up the Wye valley. Older property, softer materials, and the most careful work we do anywhere on the patch.

Older buildings need the gentlest method.

Lime mortar, soft local stone and slate do not tolerate pressure. Opening up a joint lets water into a wall that has been fine for two centuries.

If your property is listed or in the conservation area, say so when you enquire.

Local conditions

Why Monmouth is different is work

Monmouth sits where the Monnow joins the Wye, and much of the town centre is genuinely old. That changes almost everything about how a job is approached compared with an estate driveway in Caldicot.

Lime mortar, not cement

Older walls here are bedded in lime, which is deliberately softer than the stone so the wall can move and breathe. Pressure strips it out, and once water is getting into the wall the problem is no longer cosmetic.

Slate rather than concrete tile

Slate resists growth better than concrete, but it gets brittle and the nails fatigue with age. The moss lodges in the laps and along the ridge rather than across the face.

Two rivers and a valley floor

The Monnow and the Wye both run through the town, and the low-lying parts hold damp well into spring. North-facing stone stays green for months.

Around the area

What we see, area by area

Monmouth is not one kind of housing, and the job changes noticeably depending on where you are.

Town centre & Monnow Street

Georgian and older

Painted render, soft stone and narrow access. Some of these properties have no vehicle access to the rear at all, which affects the price more than the area does.

This is the gentlest work we do. Everything is tested on a discreet area first.

Overmonnow & Wyesham

Mixed, older and newer

A broader mix — some Victorian terracing, some post-war and later housing with concrete tile roofs and block paving. More conventional work than the centre.

Newer estates on the edges

Recent decades

Indian sandstone patios and modern render, the same as anywhere else built in the last twenty years. Indian sandstone cleaning →

Wye valley villages

Llandogo, Tintern, Redbrook, St Briavels

Scattered, often older, and under heavy tree cover along the river. Gutters here fill quickly and roofs on shaded pitches carry a lot of moss.

Getting to you

How Monmouth fits into our round

Monmouth is about thirty minutes up the valley, and we are there regularly rather than occasionally. There is no travel charge, but it is worth booking a little further ahead than for Chepstow itself.

If a neighbour wants work doing at the same time, say so when you get in touch — two jobs on one trip costs less than two separate visits, and it usually means a sooner date.

What a great company! James provided a very reasonable quote covering both a patio and gutter clean and explained exactly what he would be doing. He turned up on the specified date, bang on time. My patio was absolutely filthy after a very wet winter but James cleaned it so well it now looks brand new. I was worried that anything he did may damage my border plants but absolutely nothing to worry about there. The gutter clean was just as good - no need for ladders, just a very long extendable vacuum piece of equipment that cleared all of the accumulated moss. Whilst the machine caught most of it, James thoroughly cleared the patio of the odd bits that fell down before starting the patio clean. The job was competed efficiently and at the price quoted. Very pleased. I’ve already lined up family and friends with James snd can’t recommend him highly enough. He’ll be back next time!

Common questions

Monmouth questions we get asked

Do you work on listed and conservation-area properties?

We clean them, and we do it with low pressure and careful testing. What we do not do is anything that alters the fabric.

If a property is listed, check whether consent is needed before any treatment goes on historic stone. We will always flag it if we think that applies rather than pressing on.

No. Lime mortar is intentionally softer than the stone around it, and pressure strips it out of the joints. Once water is getting into the wall itself, the problem stops being cosmetic.

These walls get low pressure and the right chemistry. More on soft washing

Yes. Slate is far less porous, so it holds much less growth across the face — the moss tends to lodge in the laps and along the ridge instead.

It is also brittle with age, and Victorian slate often has nail fatigue. Careful handling matters more than pressure. Roof cleaning

Yes — Llandogo, Tintern, Redbrook, St Briavels and the rest of the valley are on the same round as Monmouth.

Tree cover along the river is heavy, so gutters there need looking at more often than most places we work.

A little further than for Chepstow, simply because it is thirty minutes each way and we group valley work together where we can.

There is no travel charge. CONFIRM-33 — typical lead times
