Driveway cleaning in Chepstow

Block paving, tarmac, concrete and resin. Each takes a different pressure, and getting that wrong is how a driveway ends up scarred rather than clean.

Can a driveway be cleaned without damaging the surface?

Yes, provided the pressure is matched to what the driveway is made of. Block paving takes a firm clean and then needs its joints refilling. Tarmac is bound with bitumen and lifts under high pressure. Resin can be dislodged. Imprinted concrete is sealed from new, and cleaning strips that sealer whatever method is used.

That is why we identify the surface and test before we start, rather than running the same machine over everything. We clean driveways across Chepstow, Caldicot, Magor, Monmouth and the surrounding villages. Quotes are free and fixed. Call 07947587517.

Surfaces

Five driveway surface, five differents jobs

A driveway is the first thing anyone sees of a house, and it is also the surface most easily ruined by the wrong approach. What we use depends entirely on what you have underfoot.

Block paving

The commonest driveway around here by a distance, particularly on the Caldicot, Rogiet and Undy estates. It cleans up better than almost any other surface and the colour that comes back usually surprises people — but the joints are the whole story afterwards. More on block paving cleaning →

Tarmac

Bound with bitumen, which softens in sun and lifts under pressure. Jet washing tarmac tears the surface aggregate out and leaves a scarred, loose finish that sheds stones for years. Tarmac gets low pressure and the right chemistry, or it gets left alone.

Concrete and imprinted concrete

Plain concrete is hard-wearing and takes a firmer clean than most surfaces. Imprinted concrete is different: it is sealed from new, and cleaning removes that old sealer along with the dirt. It will look flat and dull until it is resealed, which is normal rather than a fault. CONFIRM-30 — resealing offered or referred out.

Resin bound

Newer, and it looks more robust than it is. The resin holding the aggregate together can be lifted by excessive pressure, and once a patch has gone it cannot be spot-repaired invisibly. Careful low-pressure work only.

Gravel and shingle

Not a pressure washing job at all. Where weeds and moss have taken hold in gravel we will tell you honestly whether treatment is worthwhile or whether the driveway simply needs raking through and topping up — which is cheaper and often the better answer.

Honest answers

Oil moss and rust- what comes out and what does not

Moss, algae and general grime come off reliably on every surface above. Staining is a different conversation, and it is worth having before you book rather than on the day.

Moss, algae and weeds

These come off, and if the growth is killed at root level rather than just blasted away they stay off for considerably longer. This is the straightforward part.

Oil and fuel

Fresh oil usually lifts. Oil that has been soaking into porous block paving or unsealed concrete for years has travelled into the material rather than sitting on it, and the honest answer is that it will lighten rather than vanish.

Rust and tyre marks

Rust from metal furniture or a leaking downpipe behaves like old oil. Tyre scuffing on block paving often lifts well. We will look and tell you which you have.

What we will say at the quote

If a stain will not come out, we say so before you commit rather than after we have packed up. And if the real answer is that a handful of blocks need swapping rather than cleaning, we will tell you that too — it is a cheaper fix and it actually works.

How it works

What a driveway clean actually involves

01

Identify the surface and test

Block paving, tarmac, concrete and resin all take different pressures. We test a discreet corner before committing to a method on the whole driveway.

02

Clear established growth

Weeds and heavy moss come out of the joints mechanically first. Blasting them out packs the debris into the edges and the drains, which just moves the problem.

03

Treat, then clean

Growth is killed at root level, then the surface is cleaned evenly across the whole area so there are no stripes and no missed edges.

04

The joints, on block paving

Cleaning takes the jointing sand out along with the weeds. What happens next decides whether the driveway still looks right in two years.

CONFIRM-23 — re-sanding included, extra, or not offered

The bit people forget

Why the joints matter more than the block

Block paving works because the blocks lock against each other through the sand in the joints. That is what stops them moving under the weight of a car.

Cleaning removes that sand along with the weeds and the moss. Leave it out and three things happen: the blocks lose their interlock and start to rock, the open joints fill with whatever blows in, and the weeds come back into it within a season. A driveway cleaned and left unjointed looks superb for a month and worse than before by the following spring.

What cleaning will not fix

If blocks are sinking or rocking, the sub-base underneath has failed. That needs lifting and relaying, which is a paving contractor’s job rather than ours.

We will tell you if that is what we can see, rather than cleaning over it and letting you find out next winter.

What it costs

Priced by area and condition

Driveways are priced by the square metre. A driveway cleaned two years ago costs less than one that has not been touched in ten, and a two-car block paving driveway with established weeds is a bigger job than the same area of plain concrete.

Access matters less on driveways than on patios — we can usually get the machine and hose straight to it — but whether there is an outside tap available still affects the price.

Doing the patio at the same time is cheaper

Setup and pack-down only happen once, so a driveway and patio booked together cost less than two separate visits. It is the most common pairing we quote for. Patio cleaning →

What a great company! James provided a very reasonable quote covering both a patio and gutter clean and explained exactly what he would be doing. He turned up on the specified date, bang on time. My patio was absolutely filthy after a very wet winter but James cleaned it so well it now looks brand new. I was worried that anything he did may damage my border plants but absolutely nothing to worry about there. The gutter clean was just as good - no need for ladders, just a very long extendable vacuum piece of equipment that cleared all of the accumulated moss. Whilst the machine caught most of it, James thoroughly cleared the patio of the odd bits that fell down before starting the patio clean. The job was competed efficiently and at the price quoted. Very pleased. I’ve already lined up family and friends with James snd can’t recommend him highly enough. He’ll be back next time!

Where we work

Estate driveways, village lanes and everything between

The estate housing through Caldicot, Rogiet and Undy went up when block paving was the default driveway, so that is most of what we clean out that way. Around Chepstow and Bulwark it is a mix. Up the Wye valley towards Monmouth there is more gravel and more concrete, and a lot more overhanging tree cover feeding the moss.

Driveways sit close together on the estates. If a neighbour wants theirs done at the same time, say so — doing two on one visit is cheaper for both of you because we only set up once.

Common questions

Driveway cleaning questions we get asked

Can you remove oil stains from a driveway?

Usually we can lighten them substantially, and often remove them entirely if they are recent. Old oil that has soaked deep into porous concrete or block paving may never come out completely.

We will assess the stain at the quote and tell you honestly what to expect, rather than promising a result we cannot deliver.

It can if it is done wrong. Tarmac is bound with bitumen, and high pressure lifts the surface aggregate and leaves a scarred, loose finish that sheds stones for years afterwards.

Tarmac needs low pressure and the right chemistry, not a jet wash.

Cleaning removes the jointing sand along with the weeds and moss. Without sand in the joints the blocks lose their interlock, work loose under vehicle weight, and weeds return more quickly.

What happens to the joints matters more than the clean itself. CONFIRM-23 — whether re-sanding is included, an extra, or not offered

Yes. Cleaning removes the old sealer along with the dirt, and imprinted concrete looks flat and dull until it is resealed. That is normal and expected rather than a fault.

Factor resealing into the plan before you book the clean. CONFIRM-30 — resealing offered or referred out

Most domestic driveways are a single visit. Larger areas, heavy established weeds and jointing work all add time.

We give you a realistic figure at the quote rather than a guess on the day. CONFIRM-26 — typical duration

Yes, and it is usually cheaper than booking them separately because the setup and pack-down only happen once. It is the most common combination we quote for.

If a neighbour wants theirs done too, mention it when you get in touch. Patio cleaning.

Yes. Cleaning works year-round and winter is usually the quietest time to book, so you will wait less for a date.

Jointing and any sealing work need dry conditions, so those get scheduled around the weather rather than forced through it.
